Introduction to Traditional Malay Music - Rentak kita! (Our Beats) Be engaged by Orkestra Sri Temasek introduces Malay music history and Malay music genres and dances such as Inang, Asli, Zapin, Joget and Lambak to the students. After the performance, students will be able to identify and understand how each music genre was brought into Singapore and evolved into what it is today, and the traditional Malay musical instruments.

 

In addition, students will be able to understand the different dance movements that accompany the respective music styles. Students will also get first hand experience learning the dance moves with a mass dance interaction segment.

Students will explore and develop a greater awareness of Malay music and dance as an important art form, while discovering how Malay music has evolved within Singapore’s cultural context. Through an introduction to traditional Malay musical instruments, students will also gain a better understanding of their unique sounds, roles and significance in Malay music.
